Looking for a Juneteenth book for kids that goes beyond the basics?
Juneteenth Joy & Celebration takes children on a heartwarming road trip to Galveston, Texas - the very place where, on June 19, 1865, the news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in America, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Curious twins Jada and Justin are about to discover why their family still celebrates.
In the music spilling into the street.
In the mural taller than two stories.
In the red drink glowing in Jada's hand.
In every story their mother tells on the road.
From the historic Juneteenth mural in Galveston to the meaning behind traditional red foods, every page is a love letter to where we come from - and a quiet promise about who we're becoming.
Inside this Juneteenth picture book, young readers will learn:
- The true story of Juneteenth and how it became a national holiday
- Why the news of freedom took two years to reach Texas
- The meaning behind traditional red Juneteenth foods (red drink, watermelon, strawberries, red velvet cake)
- Real Galveston landmarks where Black history was made, including Ashton Villa and Emancipation Park
- The lasting power of heritage, ancestors, and family pride
Perfect for:
- Family Juneteenth celebrations and bedtime read-alouds
- Pre-K through 3rd grade classroom libraries
- Black History Month and June curriculum
- Diverse, multicultural, and African American picture book collections
- Juneteenth gifts for children, grandchildren, godchildren, and students
Bonus features for parents and teachers:
- Words to Know glossary
- Family discussion questions
- Stunning, culturally rich illustrations on every spread
Some books teach a holiday. This one hands down a legacy.
Ages 4-8 - A Two by Twins picture book.
