The First Oration Against C. Verres is a book written by Marcus Tullius Cicero in 1868. The book is a speech given by Cicero in 70 BC in the Roman Senate against a corrupt governor named C. Verres. The speech is divided into three parts, with the first part focusing on Verres' corrupt practices during his time as governor of Sicily. The second part of the speech discusses Verres' theft of artwork and other valuable items from the province. The final part of the speech is a plea for justice and accountability for Verres' actions. The book includes short English notes to help readers understand the historical context and language used in the speech. The notes provide explanations of important terms and references, as well as background information on the political and social climate of ancient Rome. Overall, The First Oration Against C. Verres is a valuable resource for anyone interested in Roman history or the art of rhetoric. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
