Maya's Mighty Cells is a warm and empowering children's story designed to introduce sickle cell disease in an age-appropriate and reassuring way. Through Maya's experiences at home, at school and with her healthcare team, children discover what sickle cell is, how it can affect the body and why understanding their own health can help them feel more confident.
Along the way, Maya learns about the importance of staying hydrated, keeping warm, resting when her body needs it, taking prescribed medicines, attending healthcare reviews and recognising when she feels unwell. Most importantly, she discovers the power of speaking up and telling a trusted adult when something doesn't feel right.
The story also encourages friends and classmates to understand that some health conditions cannot always be seen. Maya may sometimes need extra rest, water, warmth or medical attention; but she still wants to learn, play, laugh, make friends, dream and join in.
With colourful illustrations, simple explanations and positive health messages, Maya's Mighty Cells promotes health awareness, self-confidence, empathy, inclusion and kindness, while reminding every child that living with a health condition is only one part of their story.
