Of The Pyrosis, Or What Is Named In Scotland The Water-brash. 1427. * I DEGREESHE painful sensations referred - to the stomach, and which are probably occasioned by real affections Vol. IV. B of of this organ, are of different kinds. Probably they proceed from affections of different natures and should therefore be distinguilhed by different appellations; but I must own that the utmost precision in this matter wilt b/e-di&cuk. In'my eflay towards a methodical Nosology, I have, however, attempted it. For those pains that are either acute and pungent, or accompanied with aiense of distention, or with a fense of constriction, if they are at the same time not attended with'any sense of acrimony-or. heavl employ' the appellation .of Gastrodynia. . To _ express those painful or uneasy sensations which seem to arise from a sense of acrimony irritating the part, or from, such a. sense of, heat as the application of acrids, whether externally or internally applied, often gives, I employ the term o Cardialgia; and .by this I particularly mean to denote those feelings which are expressed by rhe term Heartburn in'thec English language. I think the term Soda has been commonly em 'ployed by practical Writers, to express aw affection attended with feelings of the latter kind. 1428. Beside the pains denoted by the terms Gaftrodynia, Periadynia, Cardialgia, and Soda, there is, I think, another painful sensation different from all of theses which is riartied by Mr Sauvages Pyrosis' Suecica; and his account of it is takerr from Linnaeus who names it Cardialgia Sputatoria.
