A First Fleet Family is a historical book written by Louis Becke and originally published in 1896. The book tells the story of the First Fleet, which was a group of British ships that sailed to Australia in 1788 to establish a penal colony. The narrative is compiled from the papers of Sergeant William Dew of the Marines, who was a member of the First Fleet and witnessed many of the events firsthand. The book focuses on the experiences of one particular family who were part of the First Fleet: the family of Thomas and Mary Bryant. The Bryants were convicts who were transported to Australia along with their two young children. The book follows their journey from England to Australia, including the hardships they faced on the voyage and the challenges they encountered upon arriving in the new colony.Throughout the book, Becke provides a vivid portrayal of life in the early days of the Australian colony. He describes the natural environment, the interactions between the British settlers and the indigenous peoples, and the struggles of the early colonists as they tried to establish a new society in a harsh and unfamiliar land.Overall, A First Fleet Family is a fascinating historical document that offers a unique perspective on the early days of Australian settlement. It provides a valuable insight into the experiences of the First Fleet convicts and their families, and sheds light on the hardships and challenges they faced as they tried to make a new life for themselves in a new and unfamiliar place. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
