Nineteen Months A Prisoner Of War is a first-hand account of the experiences of Lieutenant G. E. Sabre, a member of the Second Rhode Island Cavalry, during the American Civil War. The book details Sabre's capture by Confederate forces in March 1864 and his subsequent imprisonment for nineteen months in various Confederate prisons, including the notorious Andersonville Prison. Sabre describes the harsh conditions of the prison camps, including the lack of food, clothing, and medical care, as well as the brutal treatment of prisoners by Confederate guards. Despite these challenges, Sabre and his fellow prisoners maintained their resolve and found ways to support each other. The book also includes Sabre's reflections on the war and his thoughts on the future of the United States. Overall, Nineteen Months A Prisoner Of War provides a vivid and compelling account of one soldier's experiences during the Civil War and sheds light on the hardships endured by prisoners of war during this tumultuous period in American history.Of His Experience In The War Prisons And Stockades Of Morton, Mobile, Atlanta, Libby, Belle Island, Andersonville, Macon, Charleston, And Columbia, And His Escape To The Union Lines.
