On the 4th September, 1860 - three trains departed from New Baily Station in Salford, Manchester after picking up just under 2,000 travelling passenger.

Each train would make its way towards Ramsbottom, Helmshore, Haslingden and further afield.

Unfortunately, tragedy would follow as carriages from the second train would split, sending them hurtling down a 1-in-100 incline and into the oncoming third train.

That morning, eleven people would be killed with over one-hundred more seriously injured.
