Der Band umfasst die Jahre 1815/16. Im Mittelpunkt des Jahres 1815 steht Goethes letzte Reise in seine Heimat an Rhein und Main, auf der er mit Persönlichkeiten wie dem Freiherrn von und zum Stein, Ernst Moritz Arndt, den Philologen Heinrich Eberhard Gottlob Paulus, Friedrich Creuzer und Wilhelm Grimm sowie den Kunstsammlern Fochem, Wallraf und den Brüdern Boisserée zusammentrifft. In der Folge entsteht die Denkschrift Kunst und Altertum am Rhein und Main. Goethes Aufenthalte auf der Gerbermühle und die Begeggen mit Marianne Willemer verleihen der Entstehung des West-östlichen Divan ma gebliche Impulse. Im Zuge der Neuordnung der Behörden wird Goethe zum Staatsminister ernannt.
Anfang des Jahres 1816 weilt Johann Gottfried Schadow in Weimar, um mit Goethe die Gestaltung des Rostocker Blücher-Denkmals zu beraten. Nach dem Tod seiner Frau Christiane verbringt Goethe den Sommer 1816 in Bad Tennstedt, wo er sich vor allem naturwissenschaftlichen Studien widmet.
Wie in den bisher erschienenen Bänden werden gedruckte (oft nach der Handschrift revidierte) und mehr als 200 ungedruckte Zeugnisse zugänglich gemacht.
