160 Acres of Betrayal is a manifesto told through poems and prose-a story of Indian Territory, of land, loss, and survival. This work follows the journey of Mvskoke Indians from the Trail of Tears (Nene Estemerkv, the Road of Misery), through the Allotment Era (1887-1934), and into present-day Tulsa, Oklahoma. During this time, the U.S. government dismantled the communal way of life held by the Mvskoke people, forcing individual land ownership and opening the door to exploitation.

For my ancestors-who did not speak English and believed land was meant to be shared-allotment brought betrayal, not opportunity. If an Indian's land held value, their life could be at risk.
