Twelve men were sentenced to die. The record would not stay buried. After the Elaine Massacre, twelve Black defendants entered death row carrying verdicts produced in a few hurried days. Their trials had the forms of law - a judge, juries, witnesses, and sentences - but the courthouse stood beneath the pressure of a white mob and a state determined to preserve its story.

The Twelve Condemned follows the prisoners, their families, investigators Walter White and Ida B. Wells-Barnett, the NAACP, and Arkansas lawyer Scipio Jones through years of appeals, danger, and exacting legal work. Their campaign reached the United States Supreme Court in Moore v. Dempsey and forced federal courts to look behind the paper record of a mob-dominated trial.
