THE STORY
Arsalan Farooq has driven the Route 9 city bus for eleven years. On a rain-soaked night, a truck loses control on the overpass and his bus is destroyed. He survives. Ten passengers do not. The court clears him. The guilt does not.
On the fortieth night, sleepless and broken, Arsalan prays in the dark - not for comfort, but for names. He wants to know who he killed. God answers.
The condition for forgiveness is absolute: Arsalan must live the life of each of the ten people he killed - inhabiting their bodies, carrying their memories, loving their families as his own. And at the end of each life, he must die as they died. On that bus. On that road. In the rain. Ten times.
When Arsalan asks how he can possibly live lives he knows nothing about - their families, their routines, their loves - the divine answer is simple and devastating: You will know, as we will teach you.
THE TEN LIVES
Among the ten were a teacher who stayed late for his students, a blind man who had spent forty-five years mapping the world in sound and touch, a nineteen-year-old who was the first in his family to reach university, a doctor who gave twenty extra minutes to every patient who needed them, a young mother whose daughter was only four months old, a shopkeeper who knew every family on his street by name, a nurse who sat with the dying when no one else would, a retired soldier who had just learned he would become a grandfather, a musician with an unfinished composition still playing in his head, and an old man who folded his hands on the bus and thought of his late wife - ready, and at peace.
None of them were finished. Each was in the middle of something that mattered. Arsalan lived every one of these lives from the inside, and died each death as they had died it - on that road, in that rain, on that night
THE RETURN & THEME
After the tenth death, Arsalan wakes in his own body - same ceiling, same kitchen, same wife. But he is no longer the same man. He carries ten complete worlds inside him. He spends months visiting each family: sitting with grief, bringing stories, listening. Not for absolution - he has stopped expecting that - but because they deserve to be witnessed.
10 Lives is a novel about the weight of invisible lives - the people we share a road with without knowing. Every passenger was, to Arsalan before the accident, a face without a name. After living each of their lives and dying each of their deaths, he understands there are no passengers. There are only people in the middle of something that matters.
