Before the Revolution, before the lines were drawn, there were people who had to live between them.
In the late 1600s, along the waterways and forests of what would become New York, a Mohawk community lives as it has for generations... guided by memory, shaped by tradition, and held together by bonds stronger than any written law.
Among them is Tahonawà ta, a boy who watches more than he speaks. He listens... to the elders, to the land, and to the quiet changes gathering beyond the village.
Then, in the bitter winter of 1690, the French descend upon Schenectady.
In the violence and confusion that follow, the lives of Tahonawà ta and a young Dutch girl named Margriet are drawn together. What begins as survival becomes something neither world could have anticipated, and a choice that will shape generations.
As old alliances shift and European powers struggle for control of the continent, the people of the Mohawk Valley face decisions that cannot be made without consequence. Tradition, loyalty, family, and survival begin pulling in different directions.
At the center is a young man learning that strength is not always measured by the weapon in one's hand, and that listening can carry its own kind of power.
One Who Listens is the opening novel of a sweeping historical saga spanning nearly a century from the frozen forests of seventeenth-century New York toward the coming American Revolution.
