One Summer is a heartwarming novel written by Blanche Willis Howard, an American author. The story is set in the late 19th century and revolves around the lives of two families - the Raymonds and the Lanes. The Raymonds are a wealthy family from Boston, while the Lanes are a middle-class family from a small town in New Hampshire. The novel begins with the Raymonds arriving at their summer home in New Hampshire. They are greeted by the Lanes, who are their neighbors. The two families become fast friends, and their children, especially the young girls, develop a close bond. The story follows the lives of the two families throughout the summer, as they enjoy picnics, boat rides, and other outdoor activities. However, the novel also explores deeper themes such as love, loss, and the challenges of growing up.As the summer progresses, the Raymonds and the Lanes face various challenges. The Raymonds' son, Jack, falls in love with the Lanes' daughter, Kitty, but their relationship is threatened by social class differences. Meanwhile, the Lanes' son, David, struggles with his feelings for his childhood friend, Alice, who is now engaged to someone else.Despite these challenges, the two families come together to support each other through difficult times.
