One Day in Chernobyl: How We Filmed The Russian Woodpecker is a six-part literary work structured as a sequence of subjective memoirs, unfolding over the course of a single day in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Written from the perspective of the central figure of the documentary The Russian Woodpecker-the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film-the book offers an intimate and fragmented narrative that blurs the boundaries between memory, perception, and myth.
The text takes the form of an essayistic reflection-a subjective recollection already shaped and distorted by the optics of time. It does not claim objectivity; rather, it presents a deeply personal perspective on events, filtered through memory, emotion, and retrospective interpretation.
At its core, the book is also about a group of people-a film crew working together under unusual and often uncertain conditions. It captures the process of making the film from within, revealing moments of tension, intuition, coincidence, and creative discovery that shaped the project.
Set against the haunting landscape of the Zone, the narrative reconstructs one day as a psychological and symbolic journey, where external reality merges with inner experience. The narrator moves through abandoned spaces, traces of catastrophe, and personal recollection, creating a layered account that is as much about filmmaking as it is about memory and the instability of truth.
Divided into six parts, the book unfolds like a sequence of visions or acts, each revealing a different dimension of the same day-shifting between documentary observation, poetic reflection, and philosophical inquiry.
If there is sustained interest in this work, it is intended to develop into a larger, expanded book.
