Magers & Quinn is proud to welcome back The Mill City Reading Series, a monthly showcase of works-in-progress by MFA in Creative Writing students at the University of Minnesota.

The showcase is free and open to the public. Speakers and genres vary every month. Come support these emerging writers!

 

April readers:

K Ho is a writer and photographer from Vancouver BC, the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples. Their lyric essay “Dispatches” won The Fiddlehead’s 2021 Creative Nonfiction Contest, and their writing has been published in PRISM International, THEM lit, and elsewhere. Their work examines bodies, desire, and absence.

 

Asha Thanki is a writer from St. Louis, MO and is in the final days (!) of her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota. Her short stories and essays have appeared in The Southern Review, Lunch Ticket, Platypus Press’ wildness, Catapult, and more. She won the 2019 Arkansas International’s Emerging Writers Prize and fourth prize of Zoetrope’s 2020 Short Fiction Competition. Her work has received support from Tin House and the Speculative Literature Foundation.

 

Emma Kaiser is the winner of the Norton Writers Prize. Her work is featured in River Teeth, The Normal School, Craft, Cutbank, Rock & Sling, and elsewhere, and she is the author of four children's nonfiction books. She is a Creative Writing MFA candidate at the University of Minnesota and currently at work on her first book, a memoir in essays.

 

Elena Ramirez-Gorski is really bad at writing bios. They are a Chicanx poet from Adrian, Michigan and their work can be found in Split Lip Magazine, Electric Literature, Poetry Magazine, and elsewhere. They're going through a pirate phase again so if you have any podcast or documentary recommendations, please let them know.

We are very excited to bring authors and readers back together in our space, and we know you are too!

As we all navigate the transition back to congregating in person, we ask that you use honesty, care, and understanding in interacting with fellow event-goers, staff, and authors.

Q: Are masks required?

A: Please wear a mask while seated in the event area.

Masks will be made available for event-goers who have not brought one with them.

 

Q: Are in store events free?

A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

 

Q: Do I need to RSVP?

A: Yes, please. Each event will now include a registration link.

 

As we navigate this step back to in-person events, we will be limiting event capacity to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all attendees and authors. By requiring pre-registration, we can easily communicate event updates and policies with those who plan to attend, and can contact attendees after the event with follow-up information.

We strongly suggest registering via the Eventbrite link provided on our website, but if you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.

We may or may not be able to accommodate unregistered walk-ins, and seating priority will always be given to registered customers. We appreciate your understanding of this new process!
