With power and compassion, Jenny Robertson weaves tales that explore the precarity of immigrant life, worker exploitation, the tensions and dangers inherent in growing up, and the ephemeral nature of the American Dream. In these stories a performer manages a First Avenue dancefloor while his estranged father takes his last breaths back home; a Michigan tornado spotter grieves the end of his marriage; Maggie Pancake returns to her Minnesota hometown, jilted by her fiancée, a professional clown; and the titular novella follows fourteen-year-old Sadie and her Finnish immigrant mining family in Iron Range Minnesota in the months leading up to the Milford Mine disaster of 1924.

Jenny Robertson is a writer from Lake Shore, MN. She holds a BA in Natural History from Carleton College, an MFA in Fiction from Pacific University, and a PhD in English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Jenny has served as writer-in-residence for Front Street Writers, as creative writing instructor for Interlochen Arts Camp and Ellipsis Writing, and has taught American literature, creative writing, global short fiction, and drama at UL-Lafayette. She is also a publishing poet and received the William J. Shaw Prize for poetry. Jenny currently lives in Wisconsin with her family.

Steve Fox is the winner of the Rick Bass Montana Fiction Prize, the Zona Gale Award for Short Fiction, The Great Midwest Writing Contest, the Jade Ring Award, and the Midwestern Gothic Summer Flash Contest. His fiction has appeared in New Ohio Review, Orca, Michigan Quarterly Review, Whitefish Review, and others. His short-story collection, Sometimes Creek, was published by Cornerstone Press in January 2023 and was named winner of the American Book Fest 2023 Best Book Award for Short Fiction. Q: Do I need to register?

A: Please do if at all possible! Use the registration button above. Registering ahead of time helps us with scheduling, book ordering, and other decisions that are made several weeks prior to the event. The more info we have ahead of time, the better.

With a registered list, we can also easily and directly communicate event updates such as postponements or cancellations.

If you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.

Walk-ins are always welcome, but seating decisions are made based on registered attendance and seating priority is given to registered attendees first.

Q: Are in store events free?

A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Q: Are masks required?

A: Masks are not required to browse in the store or at most events. Some events may come with a request for masking for the health and safety of the author. If so it will be noted here whenever possible.
