George Slade presents My Father's Shirts

My Father's Shirts is an exploration, in words and photographs, of a parent/child relationship as it journeys into the wilderness of Alzheimer's dementia. George Slade's photographs of his father during their meetings between 2018 and 2021 were first published on Instagram, accompanied by texts that offer a complementary perspective on the significance of the moments. Also appearing in the book are comments by Instagram followers of George's; their supportive input was critical during the intense period of Covid quarantine, when the only way George could visit his father was through video connection.

George Slade was born in St. Paul in the very early 1960s. He has worked with and written about contemporary photographers since graduating with a degree in American Studies from Yale University in the 1980s. He received an MRAC/McKnight Foundation Next Step award for his photographic research in 2019, and a Minnesota State Arts Board fellowship in 2022 for a project linking personal memoir with archival photographs. My Father's Shirts is his first book.

Becca Munoz is a Licensed Assisted Living Director whose work is primarily focused on overseeing the operations of a local Independent Living and Memory Care facility. Becca graduated from Bethel University with her B.A. in Human Services and certification in Senior Care Leadership and Administration. She has held numerous roles over the last eight years as she has worked in long-term care and hospice settings. Starting from a young age, Becca has always had a passion for serving older adults and advocating for ensuring their dignity is preserved as they and their families navigate the aging process.

A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Q: Do I need to RSVP?

A: Yes, please. Each event will now include a registration link.

As we navigate this step back to in-person events, we will be limiting event capacity to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all attendees and authors. By requiring pre-registration, we can easily communicate event updates and policies with those who plan to attend, and can contact attendees after the event with follow-up information.

We strongly suggest registering via the Eventbrite link provided on our website, but if you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.

We may or may not be able to accommodate unregistered walk-ins, and seating priority will always be given to registered customers. We appreciate your understanding of this new process!
