Wolfish is a story about obsession. It is a story about the hunter and the hunted. It is a story about confronting fear, the cultural constructions of predator and prey, and what it means to navigate a warming world in which we can be both. And ultimately, it is a story about the relationship between a writer and a wolf.

From 17th-century Europeans referring to mysterious bodily sores as wolves, to contemporary xenophobia about wolves crossing national borders, wolves have long been made to carry our most entrenched sociopolitical, environmental, and bodily fears. The narrative begins with the legendary tagged wolf OR-7, and his long-distance solo journey after he separates from his pack in northeastern Oregon. While charting OR-7’s record-breaking journey out of the Wallowa Mountains, Berry simultaneously details her own coming-of-age as she moves away from home and wrestles with inherited beliefs about violence, vulnerability, femininity, and the body. From her grandfather’s sheep farm in Oregon to a wolf sanctuary on an aristocratic English estate, Berry bridges the gap between human fear and grief through the lens of a wrongfully misunderstood species.

A timely book for current and future generations, and a brilliant, kaleidoscopic exploration of wolves, both real and symbolic, WOLFISH is a powerful reckoning with the stories we tell about fear, the natural world, and ourselves.

Erica Berry is a writer based in her hometown of Portland, Oregon. She has an MFA from the University of Minnesota, where she was a College of Liberal Arts Fellow. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian, The New York Times Magazine, The Yale Review, Outside Magazine, Catapult, The Atlantic, Guernica, and elsewhere. Winner of the Steinberg Essay Prize and the Kurt Brown Prize in Nonfiction, she has received fellowships and funding from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, Tin House, the Ucross Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources. A former Writer-in-Residence with the National Writers Series in Traverse City, Michigan, she is currently a Writer-in-the-Schools with Literary Arts in Portland. Wolfish is her first book.

V. V. Ganeshananthan is the author of Love Marriage, which was longlisted for the Women's Prize and named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post. Her work has appeared in Granta, The New York Times, and Best American Nonrequired Reading, among others. A former vice president of the South Asian Journalists Association, she has also served on the board of the Asian American Writers' Workshop. She is a member of the board of directors of the American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies and the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. She teaches in the MFA program at the University of Minnesota and co-hosts the Fiction/Non/Fiction podcast on Literary Hub, which is about the intersection of literature and the news.

A: Masks are not required to browse in the store. However, we strongly encourage masking while seated in the event area and waiting in the signing line.
