Publisher's Comments

In 1895, St. Paul architect Cass Gilbert's entry won the design competition for the new Minnesota state capitol building. This beaux-arts masterpiece--which utilized Italian marble and featured a golden dome modeled after St. Peter's Basilica--would take some nine years to complete. Aimed at general readers, this volume tells the story of the construction of the capitol and describes how its architecture expressed Minnesotans' pride in their state and hopes for the future. The text is accompanied by more than 100 color and b&w illustrations. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
