The Uprising, also commonly referred to as the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, represented a spontaneous revolt by the Hungarian people against the ruling Stalinist regime and Communist party at the time. The Uprising was in response to post-war Hungary's crippling development under Moscow's Soviet policies and oppression.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 represented a pivot in the history of the Cold War, and a major break in my own life, as it marked my emigration to Argentina. The facts are well known, and most people of a certain age remember the saga of a small country in the Soviet bloc that tried to go its way and failed. It was the first serious challenge to the Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe after World War II. It popularized the term freedom fighter. I was 8 years old when it happened, but I have some unforgettable memories of the Soviet tanks advancing against civilian fighters on the street. I try to describe the Budapest I remember, destroyed by the Soviet bombing, and our lives during and after those days.
