Não seria exagero dizer que, para um território geográfico muito pequeno (apenas 20.747 quilômetros quadrados), o PaÃs Basco inspirou uma infinidade de estereótipos intensos. Alguns desses estereótipos foram lançados sobre seu povo de fora, enquanto outros foram propagados estrategicamente pelas próprias pessoas. Para uma área tão pequena de terra que abriga apenas 3.000.000 de pessoas, o PaÃs Basco é tudo menos pequeno em termos de história, razão pela qual as opiniões sobre seu povo são tão intensas, tão consequentes e tão contraditórias. O povo basco tem sido denominado o povo que canta e dança ao pé dos Pireneus, uma descrição que evoca não só a sua localização geográfica, mas também as suas fortes tradições folclóricas. Embora esses estereótipos mesquinhos tendam corretamente a antagonizar o povo basco, muitos nacionalistas bascos estão ansiosos para cultivar uma imagem de sua cultura como única e separada da Espanha e da França, as nações maiores que engolem seu território e que ameaçam sua autonomia. Os nacionalistas bascos estão ansiosos por apontar para a rica tradição de arqueólogos, polÃticos, antropólogos, nacionalistas e folcloristas que cresceram com sua cultura.
