Between Geometry and Geography: Mexico City examines--through photography, archival material, and analytical drawings--the urbanistic evolution of Mexico City. The volume focuses specifically on the relationship between major public works projects and the urban fragments they have created in order to construct a visual analysis of the most dominant urban morphologies at play in the city. Organized in seven topical chapters --From Lake to City, From City to Metropolis, Mobility Networks, Logistical Footprints, Housing Stock, Hydrological Landscapes, and Urban Visions-- the book tests the ability of design to confront and break down the perceived immensity of Mexico City by singling out and analyzing key urban projects that have shaped the city for over 600 years. Furthermore, central to this volume is an exploration of how the methodological diversity of urban design can help rethink ongoing mobility projects in the city as the backbone for much more ambitious and integral urban projects of diverse scope and ambition. The volume also includes a collection of writings by Loreta Castro Reguera, Pablo Landa, Louise Noelle, Peter G. From the 1920s onwards, Milan has become a laboratory of architecture due to architects such as Giuseppe Terragni, Gio Ponti and Giuseppe Pagano. Magazines such as Domus and Casabella were founded in the 1920s which influenced international debate throughout the 20th century. A new trend arose following the reconstruction of the city due to damages incurred during World War II: the city is now able to combine modernity with its existing context through the works of BBPR, Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella and Franco Albini. These architects introduced the renowned design which is nowadays identified with Milan. In the last decade, an outstanding urban development took place owing to areas which feature the work of internationally renowned architects, including David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind, as well as Italian architects such as Cino Zucchi and Stefano Boeri. Owing to its ambitious projects, Milan has transformed from an industrial city to a global capital of culture, fashion and leisure. This guide proposes thematic itineraries for discovering one of the most architecturally exciting European cities.
Since the mid 1970s, there has been an extraordinary renewal of interest in early modern architecture, both as a way of gaining insight into contemporary architectural culture and as a reaction to neoconservative postmodernism. This book undertakes a critical reappraisal of the notion of modernity in Mexican architecture and its influence on a generation of Mexican architects whose works spanned the 1920s through the 1960s.
Nine essays by noted architects and architectural historians cover a range of topics from broad-based critical commentaries to discussions of individual architects and buildings. Among the latter are the architects Enrique del Moral, Juan O'Gorman, Carlos Obregon Santacilia, Juan Segura, Mario Pani, and the campus and stadium of the Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City.
Relatively little has been published in English regarding this era in Mexican architecture. Thus, Modernity and the Architecture of Mexico will play a groundbreaking role in making the underlying assumptions, ideological and political constructs, and specific architect's agendas known to a wide audience in the humanities. OAB draws on the collaborative nature of the Carlos Ferrater previous studio, incorporating new ways of understanding the contributions of each team member to generate richer and more varied, prepared and flexible projects. The creation of this new platform attempts to address the challenges that contemporary architecture has raised in intellectual, social, technological, and environmental spheres.The contents are organized as a collection of chapters that turn the spotlight on both projects and recently built works. These convey a willingness to work in different scenarios, expanding and enriching the range of proposals in the pursuit of new avenues of formal expression. The book covers the theoretical aspects of each project, focusing on innovation, research, and the application of new technologies. At the same time, as we explore each project's development, emphasis is placed upon context, the building's objectives, and the social roots of the architect's work.
The Korsmo House, 1955, is an icon of moder n Scandinavianarchitecture--an experimental house that has been frequently published in magazines and architecture anthologies. A few years ago a jury elected the house as one of the ten most significant buildings in Norwegian twentieth century architecture. Professor Knut Hjeltnes says in the Arkitektur-N 5/2012 review that "Planet Road, 12, is one of the most important private houses in Norway, owing both to the qualities of the house and the significance of the inhabitants in Norwegian post-war culture." The original owner, Grete Prytz Kittelsen (earlier Korsmo) lived in the house until she passed away in 2010. The house is now listed for preservation. Arne Korsmo (1900-1968) was a prominent Norwegian architect, best-known for a large number of functionalist buildings and interiors made in the 1930s. Also a renowned exhibition architect and product designer, Korsmo was highly-esteemed as a post-war teacher of architecture and interior design. Grete Prytz Korsmo (later Kittelsen, 1917-2010) was a goldsmith and pioneering enamel artist, a 'grand lady' of Scandinavian design and a trusted member of the World Craft Council. Scandinavian Design is subject to increasing interest worldwide and with it so is the Korsmo House. The Korsmo couple were the incarnation of post-war Scandinavian design, winning prizes internationally for product design and exhibition architecture. Planetveien 12 discusses the location of this architectural icon, the house's many incarnations, the biographies of the architect and the Korsmo couple's visit to America where they met Hugo Weber, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and, significantly, Ray and Charles Eames. The book also details Korsmo's other projects and his teaching careeer, alongside detailed plans from inception and a full photographic essay about the finished house. The author, Elisabeth Tostrup, is an architect and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture; previous publications include Norwegian Wood: the Thoughtful Architecture of Wenche Selmer, 2006, and Architecture and Rhetoric: Text and Design in Architectural Competitions, 1999.
