Aaron Siskind 100
1st Edition Hardcover ISBN: 1576871940
One of the most important and influential artists working with photography during the twentieth century, Aaron Siskind is being celebrated on the occasion of his 100th birthday with publication of this comprehensive monograph, bringing together both well-known and never-before-published images. Siskind's prolific career spanned six decades and left its mark on both photography and painting. In 1932, at age twenty-nine, Siskind began his career as a photographer and spent the next nine years under the auspices of the New York Photo League, working on social documentary photography. Around 1940, Siskind made a shift toward abstraction and entered an art world populated by painters and sculptors. During the course of the decade, Siskind began to explore a vision that depended on the shallow plane, and utilized delicate, minimal designs. "For the first time in my life subject matter, as such, had ceased to be of primary importance," Siskind explained. "Instead I found myself involved in the relationships of these objects, so much so that the pictures turned out to be deeply moving and personal experiences." The photograph had become the object. Siskind's style of gesture and nuance, a new form of visual calligraphy, dominated his work for the next forty years, and ran parallel to the developments of his colleagues, the abstract expressionists. Siskind was not only a critical figure in modern photography, but also influenced the work of painters of that period, including Willem De Kooning, Franz Kline, and Robert Rauschenberg. Aaron Siskind 100, book and exhibition, honors the legacy of this legendary artist through six decades of an incredible photographic journey.

In these pages are the Vietnamese and Cambodians that the American tourist never see, never hear about. Here are the results of the US spraying Agent Orange over these countries. Never has its effects on humans been so clearly shown as in this book by Philip Jones Griffiths, one of the great photographers of the war, who feels we should see what Agent Orange has done. It is almost unbearable, but to turn away and not see the photographs is to compound the crime.

From the 1970s onwards, the philosopher and art critic Alair Gomes devoted himself exclusively to the development of a photographic work without equal. Within an immense erotic tableau dedicated to the beauty and nudity of the male body, his pictures secretly taken at Rio de Janeiro's beaches or from his Ipanema apartment, then fastidiously reworked and organized in sequences according to a rhythm and a "visual music," plot out a fresco of extraordinarly visual scope. Presented by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris March 14-May 27, 2001, the exhibition Alair Gomes, which brings together more then 400 images, is the most ambitious project on this artist to date. This exhibition catalogue is the first book on the oeuvre of the photographer Alair Gomes. It assembles a group of texts by Alair Gomes, Christian Caujolle, Lauro Cavalcanti and Maria Claudia Coehlo, Paulo Herkenhoff, and an interview between Joaquim Paiva and the artist.

This monumental survey is the first to do justice to Cecil Beaton’s astonishing photographic career spanning six decades, from the 1920s to the 1970s. To create it, Mark Holborn thoroughly explored Beaton’s vast studio archive, revealing an artist of extraordinary energy and ambition who made definitive portraits of the leading figures of his time, including Pablo Picasso, Gertrude Stein, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, David Hockney, and Mick Jagger. Beaton immerses the reader in memorable social and cultural scenes, including the ceremony of the British royal family, the society of the 1920s, the glamour of Hollywood, the drama of World War II, the high artistic bohemia of Paris and London, and the pop royalty of the 1960s. Holborn contributes an introductory essay, and Annie Leibovitz offers an appreciation of Beaton as a portrait photographer.
