The $64 Tomato
How One Man Nearly Lost His Sanity, Spent a Fortune, and Endured an Existential Crisis in the Quest for the Perfect Ga
Paperback      ISBN: 1565125576

Bill Alexander had no idea that his simple dream of having a vegetable garden and small orchard in his backyard would lead him into life-and-death battles with groundhogs, webworms, weeds, and weather; midnight expeditions in the dead of winter to dig up fresh thyme; and skirmishes with neighbors who feed the vermin (i.e., deer). Not to mention the vacations that had to be planned around the harvest, the near electrocution of the tree man, the limitations of his own middle-aged body, and the pity of his wife and kids. When Alexander runs (just for fun ) a costbenefit analysis, adding up everything from the live animal trap to the Velcro tomato wraps and then amortizing it over the life of his garden, it comes as quite a shock to learn that it cost him a staggering $64 to grow each one of his beloved Brandywine tomatoes. But as any gardener will tell you, you can't put a price on the unparalleled pleasures of providing fresh food for your family.

P. T. N. SPENCER-PHILLIPS Co-ordinator, Downy Mildew Working Group of the International Society for Plant Pathology University of the West of England, Coldharbour Lane, Bristol BS16 1QY, UK Email: peter.spencer-phillips@uwe.ac.uk It is a very great privilege to write the preface to the first specialist book on downy mildews since the major work edited by D. M. Spencer in 1981. The idea for the present publication arose from the Downy Mildew Workshop at the International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP) held in Edinburgh in August 1998. Our intention was to invite reviews on selected aspects of downy mildew biology from international authorities, and link these to a series of related short contributions reporting new data. No attempt has been made to cover the breadth of downy mildew research, but we hope that further topics will be included in future volumes, so that this becomes the first of a series following the five year ICPP cycle.

Biological Control
Biological Control
Paperback      ISBN: 1461284902

Nearly twenty years have passed since the publishing of a broadly-based texthook on hiolog- ical control (Huffaker and Messinger 1976). In the interim, other works on biological control have been either briefer treatments (DeBach and Rosen 1991), or collections of essays on selected topics (Waage and Greathead 1986; Mackauer and Ehler 1990). Our text has been written to fill what we believe is a need for a well-integrated, broadly-based text of appropriate length and degree of technical detail for teaching a one semester upper level course in hiological control. We have attempted to focus on principles and concepts, rather than on biological control of particular taxa or hiological control by particular kinds of natural enemies. Therefore, for example, the reader will find the material on biological control of weeds integrated with biological control of insects and mites into chapters on principles, techniques, and applications rather than presented separately. Only biological control of plant pathogens is addressed independently, an appraoch made necessary by the many special features and concepts in plant pathogen biological control.

The International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), established in 1962, is an intergovernmental organization of 13 countries: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. Four institutes (Bari, Italy; Chania, Greece; Montpellier, France; and Zaragoza, Spain) provide postgraduate education at the Master of Science level. CIHEAM promotes research networks on Mediterranean agricultural priorities, supports the organization of specialized education in member countries, holds seminars and workshops bringing together technologists and scientists involved in Mediterranean agriculture and regularly produces diverse publications including the series Options M diterran ennes. Through these activities, CIHEAM promotes North/South dialogue and international co-operation for agricultural development in the Mediterranean region. Over the past decade, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza has developed a number of training and research-supporting activities in the field of agroecology and sustainability of agricultural production systems. Some of these activities have been concerned with the rational use of pesticides and more particularly with the implementation of integrated control systems in order to gain in efficacy and decrease both the environmental impact and the negative repercussions for the commercialization of agricultural products.

The Conference was held at Royal Garden Hotel, Trondheim, Norway, 1-5 July 1996. This was the second Trondheim Conference on Biodiversity, the first being the NorwaylUNEP Expert Conference on Biodiversity, 24-28 May 1993. The conference was organised by the Norwegian Directorate of Nature Management, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and the Norwegian University for Science and Technology (NTNU) and its Centre for Environment and Development (SMU), all based in Trondheim. These institutions are all active in the fields of management, education and research related to biological diversity. Weare extremely grateful for the support we have received from all these national and international institutions.

Physical Control Methods in Plant Protection
Physical Control Methods in Plant Protection
Hardcover      ISBN: 3540645624

Jointly published with INRA, Paris.

Pesticide resistance is becoming more frequent and widespread with more than 500 insect species known to have become resistant to synthetic insecticides. On the other hand, consumers increasingly demand agricultural products without any pesticide residues. This book, for the first time, shows the alternative: solely physical methods for plant protection by means of thermal, electromagnetic, mechanical and vacuum processes. A glossary rounds up this extremely valuable book.
