Publisher's Comments
Leonard has written extensively about the parish churches in Shropshire and Herefordshire, where he is now retired from medical general practice, but here he returns to his native London. The book provides a straightforward historical account of the evolution of London's parish churches over the course of a thousand years, from Anglo-Saxon beginning to the dawn of the 21st century, he says, but can also serve as a reference to particular churches. His periods are the medieval legacy, the age of Inigo Jones (1573-1652), Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723), his successors, from Italian to Greek and Gothic (1810-40), the Victorian era, and the 20th century. The entries average about two pages, and include one or more color photographs. There is an allusion to a first edition. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
