Publisher's Comments (cont.)
A beautifully formatted and informative book on a little-known subject, this is a pleasure both to look at and to read. Stephenson (biology, U. of Arkansas) provides fascinating details on all aspects of fungus biology, little-known facts and occasional revelatory trivia. This is not a trivial book, however: the emphasis is on biological descriptions, not wowing factoids. The first chapter describes fungi in general; subsequent chapters concentrate on different representatives of the kingdom, from edible mushrooms to slime molds and lichens. A discussion of the ecological function of the fungi and their significance to the biosphere in general and a short digression on fungus paleontology close the book.
