Publisher's Comments
The School of American Research (SAR) sponsors Contemporary Indian Artists gatherings devoted to traditional arts and crafts, so that artists from various tribes can share techniques as well as ideas and contemporary innovations. Basketry, following other traditional arts, is currently enjoying a surge of contemporary innovation and appreciation. Anthropologist McGreevy, an authority on the Indian basketry traditions of the American Southwest (she's affiliated with the Wheelwright Museum and the School of American Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico) provides an informative essay on techniques and traditions. The ten participating artists include members of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah tribes (Pima, Apache, Hopi, DinT, Pueblo, and Tohono O'odham). Each prepared a basket for the gathering, shown in color photos along with other samples of the artist's work; accompanying text gives an intimate view of each artist's approach. Annotation c.
