Publisher's Comments (cont.)
The Arctic is the last great wilderness of the northern hemisphere. The Complete Story investigates and celebrates this harsh, but magnificent area. Antarctica, with which the Arctic is compared in several brief chapters, is a landmass surrouudcd by a hostile sea which has limited both human and mammal access. The Arctic is a sea - a frozen sea - surrounded by inhabited land. Access has therefore been possible over millenia and, specifically, at all times since the last Ice Age. As a consequence the area has a rich human history, one covering both native peoples and explorers who came seeking passages to the riches of the East, new lands and the North Pole. Both mammals and birds found their way as well, creating a rich diversity of species adapted to survive the rigours of the Arctic climate.
