Publisher's Comments
The colorful, often heavily decorated book covers made in the Victorian era are expertly catalogued in this substantial volume. King (no affiliation is noted) mined private and public collections in England, particularly that of the British Library, for examples of bindings, resulting in a comprehensive catalogue of 752 examples arranged alphabetically by artist. Bindings are included by Charles Henry Bennett, Walter Crane, Richard Doyle, Robert Dudley, Owen Jones, John Leighton, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, among others. Each catalogue entry provides a detailed formal description of the binding and lists its size, date, and place of production. There are some b&w and 111 excellent color plates; not all bindings are depicted. Co-published with the British Library (British Library ISBN: 0-7123-4723-2).
